Course Descriptions

All training programs can be completed in a private, semiprivate, or group format.

Good Dog! Manners

Everyone wants a polite companion they can take anywhere and introduce to anyone. After six lessons in our “Good Dog!” manners program, dogs will be well on their way to the responsive and reliable companion you’ve always wanted. During this 6-week course, your dog will receive basic obedience training such as sit, down, stay, loose leash walking, wait at the door, leave it, coming when called and go to place.

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is a program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. This program will help your puppy, become a well-behaved, healthy member of your family and community. The acronym S.T.A.R. stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsible Ownership- these are key components every puppy needs to have a good life & this training program will help you every step of the way! Puppies who graduate from S.T.A.R. classes have the foundation to be successful in the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program, as well as succeed in more advanced activities such as obedience, agility, rally, and therapy dog work. This course includes an introduction to basic obedience, housebreaking, crate training, socialization, and responsible dog ownership.

AKC Canine Good Citizen

The prerequisite for this class is at least one session of Good Dog! Manners, AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy or a pre-session evaluation.

The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that emphasizes responsible dog ownership for owners and good manners in the public for dogs. Dog and handler teams will practice greeting people politely, walking nicely with distractions, sit and down stay at a distance, and much more! All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test will receive a CGC ribbon, a certificate from the American Kennel Club and earn the CGC title.

AKC Community Canine

The prerequisite for this class is to have obtained the Canine Good Citizen title.

Dogs passing the AKC Community Canine test will earn the “CGCA” (advanced CGC) title and “CGCA” may be listed after the dog’s name. AKC Community Canine expands on CGC skills and lays the beginning foundation for obedience, rally and therapy dog work.

While Canine Good Citizen tests are simulations of real world skills, the goal of AKC Community Canine is to test the dog’s abilities in a natural setting. For example, rather than the test being administered in a ring, certain elements will involve the dog walking through a real crowd, whether at a dog show or on a busy sidewalk in the community.

As with CGC, AKC Community Canine requires a 10-step test that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC Community Canine title.

Intro to Scentwork

This class has no prerequisites. Your dog doesn’t need any prior training! You will get a peek into the science of scent theory and learn how to teach your dog to tell you the location of a hidden scent. This is the same way detection dogs across the world are taught to alert to bombs, drugs, agricultural items, and medical issues. The goal of this six week course is for dogs to love the game of searching and to build the foundation to be able to find a hidden target odor.

Dogs work one at a time, so scent work class is appropriate for dogs who can be grumpy with other dogs. This group class is not appropriate for human or dog aggressive dogs. Many of those dogs can gain confidence through private scent work lessons in conjunction with behavioral modification work. Please contact me to arrange private sessions or if you have any reservations about your dogs ability to be in a room with other dogs and people.

Agility Intro and Foundation Training

The prerequisite for this class is at least one session of Good Dog! Manners lessons or the Canine Good Citizen title.

These training lessons introduce you and your dog to jumping, weave poles, basic sequences, targeting and more! These fun lessons will give you and your dog a great mental and physical workout. Along with basic agility skills, this class will also give you the foundations to succeed in any dog-sport class.

Rally Obedience

Come and join in the exciting and fun sport of Rally! Like agility, the dog and owner navigate a course and follow the directions on each sign or station. Dogs perform basic obedience maneuvers such as sit, down and heel, as well as many fun exercises such as weaving through cones, jumping, and more. This sport will strengthen your dog’s focus and responsiveness to basic obedience commands while increasing your bond and connection with your best friend!

Did you know – The Novice level of this AKC event is performed on lead and the handler encourages the dog to do his best with unlimited verbal instruction and praise throughout the course. Clap your hands and praise your dog to your heart’s content. Get 3 qualifying scores and you have earned a title with your dog: RN (Rally Novice). If you are not interested in titles, and just want to come and have fun with your dog, then Rally is the class for you!

Competitive Obedience

We offer private lessons in all levels of competition Obedience from Beginner Novice through Utility. We believe competition obedience is all about performing with your dog as a team! We work with you one-on-one to help coach you in the art and skill of competitive obedience training and give you the tools you need to surpass your training goals. Relationship building games, precision heeling, retrieve training, proper ring etiquette and advanced attention skills are all important features of our competition lessons.
